Below are all my tweets from Norman Neilsen Group’s Usability Week conference in Chicago (April 2010). You may want to read from the bottom up if you want them in chronological order. I’ll be blogging about other conference topics over the coming weeks, particularly about the number one usability issue on most sites – findability/navigation.
- @maxticket NN Group conference highly recommended. Best part is seeing videos that demo #usability issues. They’re pretty convincing!
- @ShawnHooper right nav blindness happens but there is a way to do it right-contextual, consistent & make it look like nav, not image #uxgc
- important factors in effective web #ia = consistency & elements that work together. #nng #usability over & out, break’s done
- Do you have unicorn tasks and users? Today’s session on #IA better than yesterday #nng #usability #uxgc
- That said, I fear top nav under images on gov sites def. suffering from banner blindness & right column too. Let’s fix in #clf update #uxwg
- Yes “banner blindness” is real! Banner=graphical boxes that look like ads, not the top image we have on all our gov sites. #nng #usability
- Nav by audience type only works if categories are mutually exclusive. Guess that’s why youth, women, aboriginal doesn’t work #nng #uxgc #ia
- @maxticket I’m at Norman Nelsen Conference see useit.com for deets. Lots of great stuff, indepth reports $ but well worth the price! #nng
- Tools you can use – web-based card sorting: websort.net optimal sort. Wireframes: balsamiq, axure, iRise #nng #uxgc #ia
- If I tweet about work on a weekend does anyone care?! Yes, I know it’s Saturday; last day at Usability Week Conference #uwc #nng
- 1 day more of IA…good thing! 77% of task failure due to IA issues. 40% findability, 25% page design, 12% search. Ouch! #nng #uxgc
- Uh oh, my own blog has #usability issues #fail but good news is I know more about IA than I thought.
#nng - Critical: 95% of people don’t view more than 1 search engine results page! #usability #nng #uxgc
- Jump links v. disorienting – clear, concise headings *way* better. Have I stressed the importance of headings enough? #usability #nng #uxgc
- “PDFs suck” words to live by from Neilsen himself. (ok, ok, they’re fine for printing) #usability #nng #clf
- “Splash screens are a miserable idea” -Neilsen. #nuffsaid #usability #nng #uxgc #clf
- Search-Users expect white box with “search” written on button to right of it, top of screen. Do it or risk #fail #nng #uxgc #clf
- Couple of quick updates from yesterday’s sessions #nng then downstairs for full breakkie. Dieu merci I’m starving. Not sleeping well
- And even more unrelated news. Chicago sunny, not too windy today, despite forecast of rain 4 week. Tonight -free visit 2 art institute yay!
- In other news, #Westin doing fab job with treat selection. Mini root beer float anyone? #uwc
- Turns out some of other conf folks using #uwc as conf hashtag. C what happens when organizers don’t strategize? #missedopportunity
- Fact#4 usability fundamentals work (mostly) internationally b/c based on human psych & computer interaction. #usability #nng /@mjmclean
- Fact#3 Even an amazing designer can’t simplify complex business rules. #usability #uxgc! #nng
- Fact#2 Write for 8th grade level = writing in simple lang, not=”for teens”. Well-edu folks like clear communication too #usability #nng
- @danachis I think implication was age of content creator as a factor of content suckage. Not relevant in my experience
- My next blog post is going to be about why content owners should *not* decide where their content goes. I <3 cybrarians #usability #fail
- Sorry for bulk tweeting. Only #fail for #nng is no wi-fi in meeting rooms. I know, we all have ADD but srsly! It’s about web! #usability
- Fact#1 If your site is organized/uses language you use at work it prob sucks b/c nobody can find anything #usability #nng #uxgc!
- Mythbusting#3 age has something to do with poor navigation/sites. What?! #idontgetit #usability #nng
- Mythbusting#2 “3 click rule”? No! People *will* click if info scent is strong. A link is a promise! Deliver what’s expected #usability #nng
- Mythbusting#1 On content sites, people *will* scroll long pages *if* content well written. Well-written=scannable. #uxgc #usability #nng

This is super to add all your tweets together… as we often see part of them… Lot of content and questions ;o)
I just looked at websort.net… this is cool. Hopefully someone will design a freeware somewhere to do this… ;o) 199$ per month is a bit pricy…
Thanks Charles. Wasn’t sure if I should but Twitter doesn’t keep them forever and not everyone is on it anyway, so here’s a quick and easy way to summarize what struck me as important to me and interesting for my colleagues.
